Paul Bowman, Martin Spott & Bruce Stuart – Three Men on the Road
25 October 2011 - 10 June 2012

An exhibition of street photography.

Three photographers explore their individual responses to the same subject matter – the interaction of people and places. Their perspectives range through different degrees of abstraction, from the human to the formal. From every-day interactions between real individuals captured in a moment, to the pure patterns formed by building and street furniture seen from normally unobserved viewpoints, via an architectural sensibility – focussed on the bare spaces between buildings, suggesting human presence by the sheer absence of figures.

Open invitation to An Evening with the Photographers, Saturday 19 November 2011, 5pm-8pm

Paul Bowman

Paul Bowman is based in Suffolk and strives to capture people in their elements. Shooting on film with natural light and waiting for the impromptu is his prime focus. The tactile nature of film along with the craft in the darkroom add to the pleasure of life in the slow lane and complement his emphasis on observation over technology.

Martin Spott is a German mathematician living in Suffolk. His mathematical background becomes apparent in his photography: He employs unusual angles to reduce 3D architecture into 2D minimalist geometry, in the Bauhaus tradition. Martin is also a keen street photographer, capturing people in their surroundings as they are: happy, sad, frivolous, serious or simply different.

The photo book Three Men on the Road with Martin's images in the exhibition can be previewed and bought here.

Bruce Stuart lives in Cambridge and practises as an architect; he is also a licentiate member of the Royal Photographic Society and a member of Cambridge Camera Club. Photographic interests include the man-made environment and the utilisation of new and traditional techniques to produce high quality images that 'get beneath the surface' of a subject.
