Stefanie Reichelt is a Cambridge researcher and photographer. She is head of the light microscopy laboratory at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute. Her research includes the development of new imaging techniques, which will enable the visualisation of molecules in cells for cancer diagnostics. The images of cells and structures are necessary to study processes, which can lead to cancer in healthy cells.
Apart from their importance for research applications, scientific images are at the same time often very beautiful which can be seen in many of Stefanie's prints and etchings that are based on such images. In her photographic work, many pieces follow the concept of multi-layered views. In some cases, layering is implicitly achieved by exploiting the limitations of photography (e.g. different parts of a frame are blurred to different extent at long exposures), in other cases, different pictures are explicitly layered to combine their visual content and meaning.
